Measuring Water Use Efficiency to Deliver a Water-Resilient Future
A deep dive into the critical role of measuring water-use efficiency, to embed enhanced resilience in a world of increasing water demand and dwindling availability.
Held during New York Climate Week 2026, this expert roundtable hosted by CDP in partnership with Ecolab will explore how measuring water use efficiency can help companies build resilience in a future shaped by rising water demand and increasing scarcity.
Global freshwater demand is projected to outstrip supply by 56% by 2030, and as much as 60% of global GDP depends on reliable access to water. While the impact of this is already being keenly felt within certain sectors (such as food, beverage and agriculture), the expansion of AI means that most industries and sectors can expect to feel some level of impact as a result of this growing challenge.
Water use efficiency is one of the key controllable levers available to companies in 2026, and as more of the world is at risk of being classed as “water stressed”, understanding how to deploy these levers becomes ever-more important. Improving efficiency can have immediate and tangible impacts: reducing costs, strengthening operational resilience, and reducing the pressure on water as a critical resource.

The discussion will bring together a focused group of senior sustainability, water stewardship and corporate risk leaders from sectors where freshwater access is a critical business issue including beverage, food and agriculture, metals and mining, petrochemicals, automotive manufacturing and technology.
This discussion will consider how sector-specific benchmarks, such as the Water Use Efficiency Index, created in partnership between Ecolab and CDP, can help organizations understand their own performance as well as identify potential opportunities to improve operational water management.
Through a discussion-based roundtable format, participants will:
Gain insight into how to measure and benchmark their own water use efficiency, as well as discuss the purpose of focusing on water use efficiency a world of increasing scarcity;
Explore where exposure to water use data can potentially uncover opportunities for immediate and impactful action; and
Get unique insights into the joint CDP/Ecolab Water Use Efficiency Index pilot, and understand how disclosure can help future-proof your approach to water-use risk management.

This event will be a 60-minute closed-door roundtable discussion, run under the Chatham House rule.
