Towards Climate Resilient Cities

Japanese municipalities are making significant progress in addressing climate challenges through comprehensive action plans and innovative local initiatives, a new report from CDP reveals.

Findings of the report include:

  • The report highlights: Heavy precipitation and extreme heat are the most significant climate hazards reported by Japanese municipalities, with over 80% expecting these hazards to increase in intensity and frequency.

  • 42% of municipalities have undertaken Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessments, while 30% have community-wide adaptation goals in place.

  • 62% of municipalities maintain community-wide emission inventories, and 47% have established community-wide mitigation goals.

The report also highlights innovative local initiatives from nine municipalities: Himeji City, City of Iida, Imabari City, Kaisei Town, Kamakura City, City of Kitakyushu, Odawara City, Saitama City, and Toyama City.
