Engagement Manager, Net-Zero Technologies

Job purpose and background

Are you passionate about driving corporate ambition and action in order to avoid the most catastrophic effects of climate change and reach a net-zero emissions economy?

With COP26 to be held in Glasgow this year, 2021 marks a critical year for the UK, and CDP is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Corporate Relations and Commit to Action teams in London for a 10 months fixed term contract.

This is a role would specifically be to work on the project partnership with Breakthrough Energy, Bill Gates-founded coalition of private investors that supports the innovations that will lead the world to net-zero emissions.

One of the key project goals it to define a framework that articulates the impact of investing in emerging climate technologies. This framework will align with existing standards and protocols, including the SBTi Net-Zero framework. More information on the project can be found on the project website.

Key responsibilities include:

The Engagement Manager, Net-zero technologies will work to successfully deliver the following outputs:

  • Engage with companies to help test and refine the emissions reduction framework during its development phase.
  • Liase with the Global Head of Value Chains and the project team on the development of the corporate engagement plan.
  • Support the creation of a mechanism to validate corporate claims for investment into emerging climate technologies and incentivise companies to make investments that align with the framework developed in the project.
  • Build a commitment mechanism which will allow corporate leaders to commit using the framework to invest in emerging technologies (potentially via the We Mean Business Coalition platform).
  • Engage We Mean Business Coalition partners to support efforts via their own memberships.
  • Conduct outreach to gain buy-in and first commitments from companies with an aim for 10 – 20 companies to commit by end of October 2021.
  • Help manage internal engagement with the aim to explore how the framework can leverage on the engagement with a wide variety of stakeholders via CDP programmes and initiatives.
  • Support in the official launch of the commitment platform and engagement and visibility-raising around COP2.
  • Manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including with commitment/ initiative partners, regional partners and collaborators, industry groups, and consumer groups to advance on corporate engagement strategy
  • Talk about the initiative in public capacity at events, workshops, roundtables and corporate meetings;
  • Coordinate closely with colleagues in CDP Corporates and Supply Chains teams and contribute to the development of key engagement materials
  • Support the project team, especially CDP’s communications team on initiatives and campaign related communications and marketing efforts;
  • Utilizing internal client relationship management systems (CRM and Excel) to keep records and track progress;
  • Assist with ad-hoc tasks as required

Required skills and experience:

We are looking for someone with experience in engaging high profile with hard to abate sectors before or worked on innovation or supply chains.

  • At least five years’ prior professional experience;
  • Ability to interact with high-level stakeholders with confidence and fluency on key campaign messages and goals;
  • Knowledge of environmental sustainability topics, particularly GHGs, climate change and renewables
  • Demonstrated experience in campaign work, sales, and/or event management preferred
  • Strong attention to detail, time management and organization skills, with an ability to work effectively under pressure;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a range of teams and external stakeholders, liaising as needed across different time zones, teams, and cultures within the organization;
  • Understanding of the aims and objectives of CDP, as well as a passionate desire to drive forward the mission of CDP;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to make complex technical subjects accessible to non-expert audiences
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a culturally and geographically diverse professional environment

This is a full-time role based at CDP’s Central London office reporting to the Global Head of Value Chains.

Salary and benefits: £35,364 - £45,000 per annum, 30 days’ holiday plus bank holidays, generous non-contributory pension provision, annual discretionary bonus (depending on company performance), Employee Assistance Programme, life assurance, Training and development, Flexible working opportunities and other benefits.
