Engagement Officer, EMEA Cities States and Regions

Job purpose and background

Are you passionate about climate action? CDP has an exciting opportunity for an individual with proven self-starter skills to support the Cities, States and Regions team to engage cities from across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) with environmental reporting and climate action. You will be involved in a variety of tasks to support the annual climate change reporting process for all EMEA cities. These tasks will range from engaging local authorities on the importance of measuring and managing environmental performance to providing high-quality support for local authorities through the development of materials, webinar and working groups and more.

About the Cities, States and Regions Team

We currently work with over 900 city and regional governments worldwide who use CDP’s system every year to report their progress on fighting climate change. Major universities, the UNFCCC, the World Bank, the IPCC, and many other organizations rely on CDP’s city data for research and decision-making.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Support the annual climate change reporting process for participating cities across the EMEA region, with a focus on the Middle East and Africa;
  • Encourage city governments to report their environmental information through CDP by: Making phone calls, sending personalized emails, organizing webinars and other outreach modes;
  • Manage contacts and ensure they remain up to date for the smooth running of the disclosure cycle;
  • Work with the regional team to develop priority lists of cities to engage and ensure these cities receive invitations and guidance on how to report;
  • Develop engagement materials to help showcase the value of disclosure;
  • Prepare and send bulk mailouts to cities across the region.
  • Represent CDP and the cities program at conferences, meetings, and webinars;
  • Help improve the quality of data and action reported by signposting cities to relevant resources to support environmental action, including guidance on developing greenhouse gas emissions inventories and providing feedback on CDP scores

Required skills and experience:

  • Demonstrable understanding of the issues of climate change mitigation and adaptation in cities, states and regions;
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills; ability to explain complex or challenging topics clearly and succinctly
  • Experience translating complex information into easily understood written or visual materials
  • Very good MS Office and especially good Excel skills, and ability to quickly grasp and master new IT systems
  • A positive and enthusiastic team player with the ability to work under pressure
  • Attention to detail and commitment to achieving high standards

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Experience working with local and sub-national governments
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Microsoft SharePoint as well as web publishing software is advantageous
  • Proficiency in at least one additional European language, with preference given to French or Portuguese

This is a full-time position, with the successful candidate expected to work for 5 days a week for a 10-month contract based at CDP’s London office. Initially, the role will report to the Senior Data & Insights Officer.

Salary and benefits: £22,223 - £27,779 per annum, 30 days’ holiday excluding bank holidays (pro rata), generous non-contributory pension provision, annual discretionary bonus (depending on company performance), Employee Assistance Programme, life assurance, Training and development, Flexible working opportunities and others.
