Climate Change Analyst/Senior Analyst

Job purpose

Are you a creative thinker passionate about climate action? Do you want to use your technical and data analysis skills to catalyze change to a net-zero economy? CDP’s Climate Change Team is looking for a skilled and enthusiastic climate change analyst to contribute to a number of exciting projects.

This role will primarily focus on research and analysis to support the successful delivery of the CDP’s project on driving corporate investment into emerging climate technologies. The project, set up in a partnership with Breakthrough Energy, aims to scale the deployment, and investment into the next wave of technologies that will enable net-zero commodities, products and services so as to drive down cost curves and bring them to price parity sooner than what is currently envisaged. One of the key project goals it to define a framework that articulates the impact of investing in emerging climate technologies. This framework will build on the existing work and will align with existing standards and protocols, including the SBTi Net-Zero framework.

You will contribute to the research and analysis which will aim to explore, test and refine recommendations for different financial vehicles to scale up finance from the private sector, and for related claims as to how this finance drives the necessary systemic change needed for building a zero-carbon economy.

You will contribute to other projects in the Climate Team and provide subject matter expertise and analysis support across CDP’s broader activities related to climate change.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct research (desk studies, interviews, surveys) to understand current landscape of, and advance thinking in, carbon accounting frameworks and emission reduction claims.
  • Conduct data analysis in Excel.
  • Produce high-quality written outputs and data visualizations and present them to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and analysis support across CDP’s broader activities related to climate change.
  • Provide general technical, operational and administrative support to the Climate Team as required.

The precise description and nature of your job may be varied from time to time and you may be required to carry out other duties as necessary to meet business needs.

Required skills and experience:

  • A degree, ideally in climate change, sustainability, environmental studies, engineering or related field.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience (academic and/or professional), preferably in corporate GHG accounting via the GHG Protocol and/or carbon markets.
  • Demonstrable understanding of relevant concepts and standards around GHG accounting and/or carbon markets.
  • Experience using qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Advanced data analysis skills.
  • Ability to present technical topics to a wide range of stakeholders and communicate with high-profile clients.
  • Excellent level of verbal and written English.
  • Highly organized, fast learner and strong attention to detail.

Desired skills and experience

  • Experience with data visualization and comfort working with large data sets.
  • Understanding of ESG reporting landscape.
  • Experience with GHG emissions accounting and reporting.
  • Understanding of corporate target setting best practice and the net-zero ambition.
  • Knowledge of climate change scenarios.

This is a fixed-term 12-month contract role with possibility for extension. The role can be based in the CDP London, Berlin or New York offices (working from home in the interim while lockdown restrictions are in place). The role will be reporting to the Senior Manager, Climate Change.

Salary and benefits: Competitive NGO salary, 30 days holiday excluding bank holidays, generous non-contributory pension provision, annual discretionary bonus (depending on company performance), Employee Assistance Program, life assurance, training and development, flexible working opportunities, and others.

Interested applicants must be eligible to work in the location which they are applying to work in.
