Florence's Smart City Control Room

The Smart City Control Room (SCCR) is a multi-level governance model paving the way for successful collaboration among utilities, public entities, the private sector, and the Municipality of Florence. The platform is open source, and facilitates the exchange of information to optimize city management.

This project shows the commitment to transform Florence, a member of the global network ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, into a smart and sustainable city.

The model is part of the Replicate project, which aims to increase the quality of life of European citizens by demonstrating the impact of innovative technologies to co-create smart city services with citizens, and to identify optimal processes to replicate successes in other European cities. Florence is one of the Lighthouse cities in the project.

The SCCR enables collecting and processing data in real time to provide a summary of key indicators which are useful to make predictions or detect anomalies. This allows both the daily management of urban public service issues and the proper planning – based on bigdata – of smart city development.

Operators will be able to monitor traffic, gas, water and electricity services, air quality, public lighting, traffic light systems, waste management, the restricted traffic area and parking. The information that was previously collected by different entities has now converged into a single system, optimizing its use.

Additionally, linked to this bigdata infrastructure, the municipality developed the mobile app IF. The goal is to allow citizens to be updated about traffic and parking conditions in real time and to function as a tool to communicate with authorities. The app also provides personalized information about the environmental impact of the user’s mobility choices and will be used to incentivize more environmentally friendly alternatives.
