Capacity Building to Financial Institutions to Measure and Disclose Financed Emissions and Enhance Understanding of Impact on Climate

Thursday 13th May | Recording available at the link below |

This session is aimed at financial institutions to help them better understand their environmental impact and exposure to carbon-intensive industries. The Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF) has published a Global Accounting Standard that details the process and methods for measuring financed emissions – step one in the process to decarbonize portfolios. CDP provides the disclosure mechanisms to report these Scope 3 emissions – step two. Due to the confusion and crowding of this space, PCAF and CDP are working to create clearer linkages in the process to reduce emissions among financial institutions. This session will go in depth into the PCAF Global Accounting Standard and how a financial institution can implement this accounting in conjunction with CDP annual disclosure. We will be discussing the long-term outcomes of accounting and disclosure, touching on the implications towards target-setting.

Resilience and Opportunity in the Sustainable Food Transition

Monday 17th May | Recording available at link below |

Experts worldwide are calling for a food system transformation within the next decade if we are to feed a growing population sustainably and meet global climate and environmental goals. The corporate food value chain has a critical role to play in this transition that also offers immense opportunity to build resilience into business strategies for present and future environmental and health threats.

This session will open with an introduction to CDP’s Sustainable Food Systems Initiative, detailing the business and environmental case for a food systems transformation and the menu of actions that have been identified for the corporate food value chain. Three panelists will then each highlight some of the best practices identified:

•How to plan your food transition strategy will highlight some of the most impactful strategies for improving corporate sustainability and resilience, such as comprehensive target setting that address a myriad of risks and impacts to companies – for example, water pollution targets as a method to address water risks while also improving farm performance.

•Implementing traceability schemes in your supply chain, particularly for forest-risk commodities, will be a forum for companies to discuss challenges and gaps in implementing traceability systems

•Driving good agriculture practices in your value chain will showcase beneficial outcomes from engaging with smallholders to implement good agricultural practices and will highlight best practice engagement tools such as financial incentivization

During the breakout session, attendees will have an opportunity to contribute to a virtual “whiteboard” which we will use to collect feedback on gaps and obstacles companies are facing in this transition. This will be used to inform our questionnaire development and engagement methods.

Pollution deep dive: transformative corporate action for a water-secure, low-carbon world

Tuesday 18th May | Recording available at the link below |

Businesses must be ready to face the shocks and stressors posed by the degradation of nature and a changing climate. COVID-19 has provided a glimpse into a global economy decimated by crisis - transformation is needed to create a resilient, sustainable and equitable economy. CDP’s latest Global Water Report, A Wave of Change, highlights how water stewardship must be integral to business strategies to reduce GHG emissions and, more holistically, increase resilience. Ambitious targets and transformational business models will be required. This session will provide a deep dive into targets focused on water quality, including corporate case studies and the connections between eliminating water pollution and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The current use, storage and distribution of water and the lack of wastewater treatment contributes 10% of global GHG emissions collectively, making it key to meeting the Paris Agreement. In the last year, companies have made progress on water use, with nearly two thirds of companies reducing or maintaining water withdrawals, thanks to the implementation of measures to reuse and save water. However, the analysis finds overall business action on water pollution is severely lacking, with just 4.4% of companies making progress against pollution reduction targets. Join us to hear from peers taking bold action to address the water pollution risk while considering water and climate action holistically.

Scaling Multi-Stakeholder Actions to Reach Zero-Deforestation Commitments

All pathways to a 1.5°C future assume a halt in deforestation and significant forest restoration.
