With support from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, CDP has established a global program of collaboration with key private and public sector actors. The program is aimed at catalysing action on deforestation risks in the supply chains of agricultural commodities from Latin America to China and Europe. As part of this program CDP has extended its Supply Chain program to include forests so that suppliers of these commodities in countries such as Brazil, Peru and Colombia can disclose on the challenges and opportunities associated with deforestation risk management to their customers and other stakeholders. CDP Supply Chain- Forests will bring unprecedented transparency to the supply chains of these commodities and will provide access to a wealth of supplier data to the investor community and policy makers.
The timing is auspicious as it coincides with a paradigmatic shift in sustainable supply-chains which is afoot in Brazil.
The “Rural Environmental Registry” (CAR) under Brazil’s Forest Code has reached 100% engagement nationally. Almost 4 million rural properties covering over 400 million hectares have been included in the CAR - an online digital geolocation registration system, based on high precision satellite imagery of estates’ forestry and environmental attributes. The CAR represents the greatest land-use governance system ever created, and is key to restoring and reforesting actions and to fighting deforestation.
The implementation of the CAR is expected to stimulate the introduction of new technologies to increase agricultural productivity, new investments in the forest and pulp & paper sectors, and even higher levels of supply chain transparency.
