Technical Manager, Climate Change Questionnaire

Job purpose and background

Are you passionate about tackling climate change? Would you like to be at the heart of driving changes through environmental disclosure?

As our ‘Technical Manager, Climate Change Questionnaire’ you will have the technical/scientific expertise to support the continuous improvement and maintenance of the CDP climate related questions, reporting guidance and scoring methodology, and to support their delivery into CDP’s disclosure system. This is an exciting opportunity for those interested in the field of environmental risk, impacts and reporting, and with experience in corporate sustainability performance measures.

About the Disclosure & Assessment Team

The Disclosure & Assessment team sits within CDP’s Data, Insights and Disclosure Department which is responsible for evolving CDP’s disclosure platform and processes. The D&A team (itself consisting of a Questionnaire & Guidance team and a Scoring team) is responsible for delivering and supporting CDP’s questionnaires and reporting guidance materials, and for assessing the responses to these questionnaires provided to CDP by companies, cities and state/regional governments.

Key responsibilities include to:

  • Maintain the quality of the content of CDP climate questions and guidance materials, in terms of substance and presentation, to enable the disclosure of information that drives CDP’s thematic and stakeholder strategies
  • Ensure that the CDP climate questions and guidance materials are delivered into the annual disclosure cycle efficiently and accurately, including the oversight of junior team members
  • Respond to internal technical queries on the climate questionnaire and guidance, and deliver training webinars.
  • Work closely with the Scoring team to support the development and delivery of CDP’s Scoring methodologies.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and analysis support across CDP’s broader activities related to climate change, including but not restricted to:
  • supporting the CDP Climate team to identify and explore priorities for future questionnaire development so as to drive the CDP Climate strategy
  • supporting CDP’s Disclosure Evolution team with its project-based development of CDP’s reporting framework
  • contributing to CDP outputs (e.g. funded projects, publications, and engagement events).
  • Build and maintain technical external relationships (with advisory panels, reporting standards etc) and represent CDP externally as an expert for climate change.
  • Manage a small team of staff (1-4 people) in assigning tasks and tracking for completion and quality

The precise description and nature of your job may be varied from time to time and you may be required to carry out other duties as necessary to meet business needs.

Required skills and experience:

  • A degree, ideally in environmental science, management or data, and preferably specialising in climate change and relating to economic or business systems, and preferably to postgrad level
  • At least three years of experience (academic and/or professional) on climate-related issues
  • Good knowledge of greenhouse gas accounting standards and initiatives in the climate reporting area (e.g. GHG Protocol, SBTi, TCFD, and CDSB)
  • Previous experience of researching and producing written outputs for a business audience
  • At least three years of demonstrable experience managing projects
  • Experience managing a small team
  • A high level of motivation, a confident and collaborative working style and strong attention to detail
  • Evidence of qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills
  • Demonstrable strong verbal and written communication skills in English

Desired skills and experience:

  • Advanced MS Excel skills
  • Experience working with IT processes and/or online content systems
  • Familiarity with CDP’s climate outputs
