Senior Project Officer For Climate And Health

Job purpose and background

Are you passionate about the environment and tackling climate change at the city level? Would you like to support work that informs policy makers of the need to act boldly to protect human health and build urban resilience? Do you have experience in data analysis and metrics development?

CDP is seeking a Senior Project Officer to support the development of an exciting new project delivered in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO). CDP has been selected to lead the development of climate- and health-related indicators which will be used to inform Climate & Health City Profiles Pages. The profiles will capture the key risks and opportunities facing global cities as a result of climate change and the potential health co-benefits of mitigation actions, health adaptation options and long-term tracking of progress towards achieving climate resilient, sustainable and healthy cities.

About the Cities, States & Regions Team

This role will be situated within CDP’s Cities, States & Regions team. Over 1,000 cities, states and regions engage with CDP each year to report their progress on tackling climate change. In addition to elected officials, the UNFCCC, the World Bank, the IPCC, major universities, and hundreds of other organizations rely on CDP’s data for research, to inform policy and decision-making. As part of a new focus on Urban Health, CDP is working with global public health partners, including the World Health Organisation and the Lancet Countdown.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing climate and health expertise and leadership to support the development of the Climate & Health City Profiles
  • Liaising with project and city partners to create a selection of climate and health related indicators that represent the largest risks/opportunities to urban populations -- taking into consideration what will be most relevant and capable of empowering city stakeholders to act decisively on climate-related health emergencies
  • Engaging and/or leading discussions with project partners in order to understand and agree what information should be included in the city profiles and how this information can be visualized to best serve cities
  • Supporting the Senior Urban Health Manager in other responsibilities as they deem necessary

You will have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria:

  • Expertise on issues related to climate change and/or urban health
  • Experience conducting researching, data analysis and producing written outputs
  • Experience in managing external relationships where various stakeholders with competing priorities/views come together and need to agree a joint way forward
  • A high level of self-motivation and drive
  • Attention to detail and commitment to achieving high standards
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of engaging with the public sector and an understanding of the sub-national stakeholder landscape is advantageous
  • Experience working with or for city/local governments
  • An understanding of public health considerations for urban environments
  • Experience with data gathering systems

This is a full-time, 6-month fixed-term contract based at CDP’s London office reporting to the Senior Manager for Urban Health. In normal circumstances, the role would be based in CDP’s Central London Office, however will be home-based in the UK for the time being.

Salary and benefits: £30,000 annual salary pro-rata for contract duration; 30 days’ holiday plus bank holidays, generous non-contributory pension provision, Employee Assistance Programme, life assurance, Training and development, Flexible working opportunities and other benefits.
