As 85% of Tetra Pak’s net sales are reliant on timber-based products, it has taken steps to ensure their primary resource is protected from environmental risks. In 2013, the company updated its procurement policies to ensure all paperboard comes from forests with permanent forest cover, allowing net-zero carbon release into the atmosphere. In line with its strategy, the packaging company sourced all its paperboard from FSC approved suppliers in 2016. To ensure security of supply, the company is working with the FSC to encourage smallholders to attain FSC certification. Not only has Tetra Pak's actions made the company more resilient, they have also opened up several new opportunities. For example, the introduction of a new product that allows the company to differentiate itself from competitors. The development of a bio-based plastic has resulted in a bottle made from 100% renewable materials, a unique product sure to be popular with increasingly environmentally-conscious consumers and retailers.
