Target Analyst, Science Based Targets

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to support CDP’s work on the Science Based Targets Initiative.

About the SBTi: The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a joint initiative between CDP, UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and World Wildlife Fund, aiming to catalyze change towards a net-zero economy by driving the adoption of GHG emission reduction targets in the corporate sector that are consistent with the ambition required to keep temperature increase well-below 2°C. Over 1,000 of the world’s largest and most influential companies have joined the Science Based Targets initiative to date. Please visit www.sciencebasedtargets.org to find out more.

About the position

The SBTi Target Analyst position sits with other target analysts from across the SBTi on the SBTi Target Validation Team. The Target Validation Team focuses on the assessment of corporate emissions targets submitted to the initiative, combining technical and client management skills to successfully deliver the target validation service. Target Analysts also support on developing and updating guidance and requirements for science-based target setting and conducting data analysis and data visualization for external reports and presentations.

About you:

The ideal candidate has strong technical and data analysis skills as well as strong customer relationship skills. This role requires attention to detail, creative thinking, and frequent collaboration.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conduct in-depth assessments of corporate emission reduction targets to ensure their alignment to the level of ambition set in the Paris Agreement and SBTi criteria;
  • Collect data and conduct analyses to assess progress and impact around target setting within the corporate sector;
  • Create data visualizations and written reports to communicate analyses to various stakeholders regarding corporate target setting;
  • Conduct research to understand current landscape of, and advance thinking in, corporate target accounting and tracking progress against emissions reduction targets;
  • Support with analyses of trends on corporate emission reduction targets reported through CDP and the Science Based Targets initiative;
  • Update internal database with company and target information;
  • Write and present training materials to disseminate best practices on science-based target setting to an array of stakeholders;
  • Provide advisory services and respond to technical questions from companies headquartered in region of application;
  • Support with the development and update of criteria and protocols to assess corporate targets against long-term temperature goals;
  • General technical, operational and administrative support as needed;
  • Assist with ad-hoc tasks as required.

Required skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in sustainability, climate change, environmental studies, engineering or related field.. The candidate should have 1-3 years of relevant professional experience;
  • Experience with data visualization and comfort working with large data sets;
  • Experience with basic computer programming, including the ability to use or learn Google App Scripts (Javascript);
  • Ability to manage, edit, and improve large databases;
  • Ability to convert units, extrapolate, and analyze data;
  • Ability to present technical topics to a wide-range of stakeholders and communicate with high-profile clients;
  • High proficiency in Excel;
  • Ability to work in a group and independently with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
  • Excellent and demonstrable technical and analytical skills;
  • Highly organized, fast learner and strong attention to detail;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Desired skills and experience:

  • Knowledge of climate change scenarios, greenhouse gas accounting, life cycle assessment and/or corporate sustainability;
  • Familiarity with corporate greenhouse gas emissions targets and current best practice in the space;
  • Experience working in global organizations and /or contexts;
  • Experience working in remote teams.
