City-Business Climate Action Manager, CDP North America

Job purpose and background:

Are you an entrepreneurial self-starter with a strong drive for results? Are you a problem solver and strategic thinker? Our Cities, States and Regions team is looking for a Manager to build out an exciting new program for City-Business climate action collaboration. You will play a crucial new part of CDP Cities, States and Regions team in North America. You will be responsible for identifying, building and managing efforts on how cities and businesses in North America can work together to deliver ambitious and coordinated local climate action to slash emissions and ensure resilience from climate change. You will report directly to the Head of the Cities, States, and Regions and work closely with the CDP North America team that works with businesses and supply chains.

About our C-STAR Team:

CDP Cities, States and Regions provides the global platform for cities and states/regions to measure, manage and disclose their environmental data. We work with over 1000 cities, states/regions to measure and disclose environmental data each year to manage emissions, build resilience, protect themselves from climate impacts and create better places for people to live and work. These entities are disclosing over 8,000 urban sustainability actions, demonstrating their commitment to building a sustainable economy and tackling climate change. We are nearing a tipping point in mainstreaming environmental action, and cities and states/regions are at the heart of this transition.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the establishment of a new and strategically important program in CDP’s North America office for collaboration between city governments and businesses to accelerate impactful climate action.
  • Informed by CDP’s previous global City-Business Alliance efforts, develop and implement a scalable North America region-specific model for cities and businesses to work together to deliver meaningful progress and outcomes.
  • Recruit and retain participation of cities and businesses and build strategic partnerships that achieve measurable impacts linked to climate action and resilience.
  • Ensure alignment and integration with other areas of CDP’s efforts include CDP’s Matchmaker program focused on city and investor engagement and CDP corporate and city disclosure.
  • Present CDP’s vision for city business climate action collaboration to a wide range of high-level audiences, including for CDP organized workshops, events and webinars.
  • Work alongside the CDP Fundraising and Sponsorships Team members to identify, recruit, manage and deliver against the partnership, sponsorship and fundraising goals.
  • Work as a key member of the NA and global CDP Cities team, representing the NA team externally at events, webinars, and conferences.
  • Contribute to fulfilling the objectives of the CDP North America strategy program plans through program development and enhancement.
  • Develop fundraising proposals and Assist with ad hoc tasks as needed.

Required skills and experience:

  • 5-7 years of work experience, preferably in a sustainability-related field.
  • Experience working with the private sector, and must possess an understanding of the drivers for private sector engagement in climate action
  • Strong knowledge of the climate challenges faced by cities, including climate mitigation & adaptation
  • Experience building and leveraging strategic partnerships and collaborations
  • Understanding of and commitment to principles of climate justice, social equity and environmental justice
  • Demonstrated project management experience
  • Experience in fundraising, business development or similar activities a plus
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills, with the ability to craft effective messaging for different audiences
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse range of stakeholders (city staff, consultants, business leaders, investors, and other NGO/civil society organizations)
  • Proficient use of productivity tools including Microsoft Office suite and CRM
  • Positive, collaborative and enthusiastic outlook even while working under pressure.
  • Attentive to detail while being able to see the big picture.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English. Additional languages a plus especially in French (given that CDP North America includes Canada) or Spanish

Salary and benefits: Competitive NGO salary, annual discretionary bonus, excellent health & dental benefits, non-contributory 401k (additional contributory 401k amount optional), 24 days’ vacation annually.

This is a full-time role housed in CDP’s New York office in Manhattan, however given the right fit, we will consider candidates in other geographic locations in the US. Due to current COVID-19 pandemic, all work is currently being done remotely and may continue as such for an indeterminate amount of time.
