Job Purpose and Background

Are you looking for the next step in your career to Director level? Would you like to work for an ethical employer and drive action on climate change through company disclosure? You will have responsibility for leading and managing the China based team, associated budget and being the ambassador for CDP in China. You will report to the regional director in London so it is important that you can act independently and take timely decisions to ensure operational delivery for CDP China.

About CDP China:

Established in 2012, CDP China have provided a unified reporting platform for Chinese companies to disclose environmental data and have identified and rewarded companies that excel in environmental protection. This has led to promotion and development of green finance and highlighted the importance of low-carbon supply chain management across China.

Together with world’s leading companies in tackling climate change, we conduct scientific benchmarking in overall performance and are therefore recognized and welcomed by Chinese companies. In 2017, the response rate of invited companies reached 80%, ranking second in the world. CDP actively cooperates with governments, financial institutions, academic institutions and other stakeholders in China to drive change. As a special member of China Green Finance Committee, CDP supports and participates in the research of important topics such as environmental information disclosure, responsible investment and risk analysis tools of listed companies. Previously, CDP’s experts supported the completion of the Green Procurement Guidelines, in which carbon market monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) and other indicators have been approved by the relevant ministries.

CDP highly agrees with the General Secretary's development philosophy of “Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets.” and looks forward to sharing more international experience and integrating more local practices while working with partners to contribute to the development of China's green finance and eco-civilization.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Fiduciary responsibility for CDP China’s Operations and legal entity.
  • Leads, manages and develops the China team and office, including line management responsibilities of senior members of the China team.
  • Works closely with other country and regional offices to share best practice.
  • Leads fundraising and high-level outreach efforts to meet CDP China’s budget targets in support of and integration with Global budget targets.
  • Maintains, develops and leverages relationships with key strategic partners in China (across all stakeholders) at senior levels in line with organisational and thematic strategies.
  • Lead representative for CDP at external events, including delivering speeches and participating in panel discussions in China.
  • Lead communications with key stakeholders including senior policy makers, multi-brands/SOE, investors as well as NGO peers, expand CDP’s brand and reputation with existing and new audiences in China.
  • Generates new projects as agreed with thematic and stakeholder boards, and maintains CDP China at the cutting edge of emerging policies and other pertinent developments
  • Ensures CDP China plays its role in the global CDP network effectively in line with the global organisational strategy, providing advice on the China context.
  • The precise description and nature of your role may be varied from time to time and you may be required to carry out other duties as necessary.

Required skills and experience:

Essential criteria:

  • Degree qualification in the related field of climate change, green finance or sustainable development or equivalent
  • with at least 5 years working experience
  • Proven track record of developing relationships with government leaders. With the ability to draft briefings and present proposals at the most senior level.
  • Proven experience in people management, account management, budgets and financial flow management as well as operational plans
  • Excellent communication, public speaking and presentation skills, able to localise the international standards into Chinese content as well vice versa
  • Experience of working in NGOs and/or commercial organisations
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with teams of multi-background/culture individuals and colleagues.

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience of working in a global organisation
  • Technologically competent: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ideally also CRM
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic, hard-working, personable;
  • Well organised; reliable, consistent; get-the-job-done attitude;
  • Strong Chinese/English bilingual skill in oral and writing

This is a full time 6-9 months fixed term contract to provide maternity cover for the current China, Director based at CDP’s Beijing office reporting to the Regional Director, Asia Pacific and Latin America.

We offer a competitive salary and social, health and housing funds in accordance with local regulations, with 20 days’ vacation per year, in addition to national holidays plus supplemental healthcare, etc. The successful candidate will be based in Beijing, East 4th ring area.
