2021 Cities, States and Regions Engagement Fellowship
Are you comfortable discussing a variety of sustainability topics including greenhouse gas accounting, emissions targets, and the value of using data to improve environmental performance and build resilience? Are you interested in receiving exposure to the fields of sustainability, environmental sciences, and/or urban planning? CDP North America is seeking two highly-driven, meticulous, passionate individuals with a proven talent for relationship building. You will be integral in ensuring cities, states and regions disclose their environmental data. You will also be asked to support a variety of operational tasks, including database management, writing procedures and internal guidance, and email tracking.
Key responsibilities:
- Securing participation in CDP Cities annual disclosure through phone calls and email support to 500+ city and state governments in U.S. and Canada to ensure all participants complete and submit the questionnaire by the scoring deadline
- Cultivating, managing, and tracking relationships with city and state staff
- Supporting all disclosure-related activities including webinars, Response Check (feedback provided to cities before they submit their responses), guidance and scoring methodology review, partnerships with organizations such as C40, Global Covenant of Mayors, WWF, ICLEI, Climate Group
- Maintaining and updating an internal database for all U.S. and Canada cities and states contacts
- Preparing for the 2022 disclosure cycle
- Support city and state staff in understanding and utilizing the full services of CDP’s programs in addition to disclosure, including:
- Matchmaker program—for city investments
- City Business Climate Alliance—North America pilot program
- Public authorities—upcoming program
- Support on projects related to analysis and insights related to Cities, States and Regions climate actions
Preferred skills and experience:
- Interest in cities and sustainability—particularly in mitigation and adaptation efforts, and green infrastructure projects
- Outgoing and personable attitude—superior interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage and follow up via phone and email
- Excellent English verbal and written competencies
- The ability to come up to speed quickly and independently with technical information (such as emissions targets or Global Covenant of Mayors badge requirements)
- Strong writing skills: must be able to accurately communicate technical information in a concise, yet comprehensive manner
- The drive to take ownership and responsibility for particular areas of work while collaborating well with team members in-person and virtually
- The ability to spot trends and opportunities as well as focus on details
- The desire and ability to improve and streamline processes to better and more efficiently achieve program goals, rather than follow the status quo
- The ability to meet deadlines under pressure; self-motivated and willingness to be flexible (you will be working with teams across different timezones)
Compensation and expectations:
- The fellowship is paid $15.00 an hour
- Duration is February through August 2021, with potential of an extension
- Hourly commitment is 26 hours per week, Hours can be flexible to accommodate the fellow’s schedule
- Fellows must be able to work legally in the US, based in the US, and able to work between 9 AM-6 PM in Eastern-Pacific time zones
- Fully remote work is possible; CDP’s North America remains remote while we evaluate our return to the office in light of COVID-19 pandemic safety precautions
- Reliable internet and phone connectivity, fellows will receive a one-time internet stipend
