BiomassaCAT in Catalonia

The region of Catalonia is a member of Regions4: Global Network for Climate Change, Biodiversity & SDG. In 2014 the government of Catalonia approved the strategy to promote the energy use of forest and agricultural biomass. The objective of the strategy is to promote the energy use of biomass and benefit from its positive environmental and socio-economic impacts.

As part of the strategy, the BiomassaCAT platform was created by the Catalan Energy Institute (ICAEN). The platform provides information aimed at increasing the competitiveness of industry and services in the biomass sector and to develop a network for companies where they can exchange information, learn from the best practices, and grow.

The platform is a result of the collaboration between the administrations of the government of Catalonia whose competencies are in the energy, forests, and environment sectors, to promote the use of biomass across the entire value chain. The website compiles recent information, news, a list of specialized companies, logistics centers, relevant legislation and useful publications related to the biomass sector. Users of the website can also register to the newsletter to receive the latest updates.

Since the strategy was launched in 2014, the consumption of this renewable energy resource has increased by 81.6% in the region.
