CDP Ireland

In 2012, CDP analyzed responses of over 225 participating businesses with operations in Ireland. This analysis provides a unique insight into the actions being taken to address climate change by many, if not most, of Ireland’s largest employers.

The report was launched by Fergus O’Dowd TD, Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and Environment, Community and Local Government, at the offices of KPMG in Dublin in early October.

The launch of the report was followed by a discussion of its implications, in the context of consideration currently being given to drafting a climate change law for Ireland, between Laura Burke (Director General of the Irish EPA), Brian Motherway (Chief Executive of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) and Rory O’Donnell (Director of the National Economic and Social Council) with Peter Brennan (Managing Director, EPS Consulting) in the chair.

Political support

In launching the 2012 CDP Ireland report, Minister of State Fergus O’Dowd said:

"The report leaves us in no doubt about the appreciation within the business community of the threat presented by climate change, and the importance of both mitigation and adaptation as key pillars of a comprehensive response. The clear existence of a well-established recognition and proactive focus on global transition to a resource-efficient, low-carbon economy augurs well for the future of the companies participating in the CDP. Both the initiative by the companies concerned and the progress already achieved are very positive and very welcome. Global transition to a low-carbon future is not only necessary and urgent in the context of an effective response to climate change, it is inevitable. Companies that anticipate that inevitability, and respond by way of early and effective action will be the leaders in shaping and driving transition, and – consequently – they are likely to be best placed to engage competitively as the global green economy matures."

Investor support

The National Pensions Reserve Fund of Ireland has been a signatory to the project since 2007. In 2012 three other Dublin investment funds are also signatories; Irish Life Investment Managers , EEA Fund Management Ltd., and Kleinwort Benson Investors.
