Q. How has working through the
CDP process helped Edwards to make strategic changes?
A. Completing CDP’s climate change questionnaire helps us to understand what the correct standards are. For example, we have
not had our climate data verified in the past but we know it is the way forward. Being part of CDP has highlighted the
business imperative for good quality data. Investing in reporting software will enable us to achieve high-quality data that
will help to clearly communicate the business case for emissions management and the associated cost saving to management. We
can then get the data verified externally. We are starting with the UK for our CDP 2013 report, before expanding to our other
operations globally. CDP helps with the justification and business case for this investment.
We are a member of CDP’s reporter services, which is a cost-effective way of maximizing the value of our reporting efforts.
Our dedicated account manager answers our queries, provides tailored assistance and keeps us informed of changes to the
questionnaire. Membership also gives us access to practical webinars and our CDP climate disclosure and climate performance
scores, which voluntary disclosing companies do not usually receive. Members’ networking events have proved very helpful.
When investigating reporting software, I could talk to other members that have been through the same journey and learn from
their experiences. Even if people are in a completely different industry, it is so useful to talk to them, you go through the
same process and have to solve the same issues.
Q. What goals is Edwards working toward and how did you establish what they would be?
A. Accounting for our greenhouse gas emissions has enabled us to understand which part of the organization has the biggest
carbon impact. This points us to where we should focus our efforts and helps to define our green goals.
We were able to identify that, like most companies, our Scope 3 emissions accounted for the majority of our emissions.
Reducing our carbon emissions is a priority for Edwards so we analyze our own carbon footprint as well as product use.
Producing products with better energy efficiency has a big impact. We also have abatement products as part of our product
portfolio. These products help us to achieve our reduction goals by acting as a carbon sink by allowing for the removal of
dangerous greenhouse gases with very high Global Warming Potentials (GWP) used in our customers’ manufacturing processes.
